New DRBA Board Members Elected for 2009
Four business owners were elected to the DRBA Board of Directors at the December luncheon: Bobi Bomar (Weichert Realtors), Larry Ponzi (Cafe Pizzaiolo), Kristina Robertson (Barkley Square and Karing by Kristina), Dr. Julie Tran D.D.S. (Drs. William Dougherty and Julie Tran).
Tina Richardson (Figaro Consulting and 4Paws2Hands), was elected President for 2009. Maria Wasowski (A Show of Hands) will remain on the Board as Past President. Lola Capps (Chrysalis Chiropractic), Maryellen Thorp (The Healing Tree), Jen Walker (McEnearney & Associates), Gayle Reuter (Congressman Jim Moran's office), Jill Erber (The Cheesetique), Eric Nelson (Artfully Chocolate/Kingsbury Confections), and Nora Partlow (St. Elmo's Coffee Pub), will be continuing on the Board this year.
DRBA's bylaws were revised in 2008 to provide for two year terms for Board members so that only half the Board will be up for election each year. The change was made to ensure continuity and stability on the Board.
Star Awards Alexandria Police Chief David Baker was presented with a Star Award at the DRBA annual holiday luncheon. Gayle Reuter recognized Chief Baker, who was the Police Department liaison with DRBA for many years, for always being there during both up and down times over many years as the commercial corridor on the Avenue evolved.
David Fromm and Amy Slack were honored for supporting the businesses during recent revisions to the zoning code which resulted in some loosening of requirements for certain businesses, and for their many hours of work on community events in Del Ray. David is currently President of the Del Ray Citizens Association and Amy serves as chair of the DRCA Land Use Committee.
Paul Coelus and Beth Offenbacker were honored for their years of tireless leadership and many hours of work on the Turkey Trot, DRBA's annual fundraiser. Paul had to create a new registration system from scratch this year using the new website. It was a time consuming and difficult process but the result was a 10% increase in the number of registrations.
