Del Ray Announces
Holiday on the Avenue Festivities

Many of the local businesses stretching along the Avenue from Mt. Vernon and Nelson all the way up to the Calvert at 3110 Mt. Vernon Ave, will be celebrating all day and continuing until 9pm. A partial list of activities includes a Holiday Show and Sale at The Clay Queen Pottery shop (2303 Mt Vernon Ave.) cosponsored by Artfully Paper (2007 Mt. Vernon Ave.) and ACKC Cocoa Bar (2003 Mt. Vernon Ave.), and a trunk show featuring local jewelry artist Tracey Navratil at A Show of Hands (2204 Mt. Vernon Ave.) and a Fine Art & Fine Crafts Holiday Market at the Del Ray Artisans (2704 Mt. Vernon Ave.).

Community tree lighting will take place at Colosanto Park, 2704 Mt. Vernon Avenue, at 6pm followed by Santa leading a procession of revelers down Mt. Vernon Avenue to enjoy the luminarias lining the street while singing holiday carols, stopping into the shops for a hot drink and generally making merry. Most of the retail stores will stay open until 9pm to celebrate the season with our neighbors in the community. At the end of the walk, Santa will welcome the kids to sit on his lap and share with him their list for the holidays (while the parents get to snap a photo or two).

Turkey Trot a Huge Success

man-wstroller.jpgBright sunshine and a light breeze created ideal running conditions for nearly 3000 participants in the 33rd annual Alexandria Turkey Trot.

Among the field were Senator-elect Mark Warner, Virginia Delegate Brian Moran, and Admiral (Ret) William J. Fallon.  Joining us to officiate were Mayor Bill Euille, Vice Mayor Del Pepper, honorary Grand Marshall Jim Fowler, and DC Road Runners Club president Ed Grant.

More runners crossed the finish line than ever before, and in an unusual turn, both the first- and second-place women broke the old course record of 27:28.  (The mens record, 23:39, held.)  Complete results will be posted on the DC Road Runners Club website in about a week.

In another first, the event raised more than $3500 in cash donations to ALIVE!, an ecumenical organization that helps Alexandrians in need.  Runners always donate a truckload (literally) of nonperishable food items, but this is the first year we offered the opportunity to add a cash contribution, which allows ALIVE! to provide perishable items like milk and eggs.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who make this annual Thanksgiving Day event a highlight of the holiday season, and to the dozens of race sponsors who help make it possible.

A few t-shirts are still available for $10 each, postpaid.  Details.
